Leagues

Rec Sports competition is typically offered in three leagues:

  • Open (no gender requirements)
  • Women's
  • CoRec  (must meet minimum gender requirements)

Divisions

Within each league, competition may be divided into the following divisions:

  • COMPETITIVE (Comp): Designed for average to highly skilled competitive teams/individuals. Sport Club members competing in the same Intramural Sport are limited to two players on a roster. A team roster may have no former college ICA players who has participated in that related sport within the last academic school year. Teams will have four scheduled regular-season games. Teams in this division will qualify for playoffs if they attend 3 out of 4 games and meet minimum sportsmanship score standards. Depending on the number of teams that qualify for playoffs, teams may be split into gold and silver brackets. Champions in this division, and both brackets, will earn a championship t-shirt that will vary in color each quarter.
  • RECREATIONAL (Rec): Strictly a beginner/social league. Designed for beginning/average skilled teams/individuals that cannot have any experienced players on the team roster. Teams will get four regular-season games for leagues and three regular-season games for mini leagues. Teams will then play an extra game against an opponent of similar rank. No playoff system or championship shirts awarded in this division.
  • GRAD/STAFF/FACULTY (GSF): Designed for teams comprised of graduate students, staff, and faculty. Limited undergrads may participate in this division, but the teams must be comprised mainly of grad, staff and faculty players. Sport Club members competing in the same Intramural Sport are limited to two players on a roster. A team roster may have no former college ICA players who has participated in that related sport within the last academic school year. Teams will get four scheduled regular-season games. All teams will advance to playoffs pending they attend at least three out of four regular-season games and meet minimum sportsmanship score standard. Champions in this division will earn a championship t-shirt that will vary in color each quarter.

Competitive Balance

Teams are strongly urged to enter into the proper level of competition. Should a team obviously be playing out of their competitive level, the Rec Sports Office will immediately counsel that team and has the right, at their discretion, to move a team up to the next class level.

Definitions

  1. Club Athletes may compete in the sport where they are "experienced" as stipulated in the rules for that activity. The term "experienced" refers to CURRENT Intercollegiate Athletes (ICA). Professional (Pro) athletes are NOT allowed to participate in our program in their sport. The term "experienced" will expire by June 30 of the current academic year. At this point, the player is no longer considered "experienced" if the player decides to no longer be on an ICA, club or pro team.
  2. The term "current Intercollegiate athlete" refers to any player who is on the roster/coaches' list of an Intercollegiate team (including athletes who are red-shirting).
  3. The term "club athlete" refers to any individual who is currently on the roster of a Sport Club team at a four-year institution.
  4. The term "professional" refers to any individual who is currently on the roster of a professional or semi-professional team in a sport.
  5. The "experienced" term only refers to an athlete that plays intercollegiate sports.

NOTE: Once a participant appears on a current ICA, Club or Professional roster they become an experienced player for that sport for the entire academic year (fall–spring). Any exceptions will be considered on a case by case basis.

Playoffs

  • For all leagues the top overall teams in the league will qualify for playoffs pending they meet the following requirements:
    • Attend at least 3/4 scheduled games (can only forfeit/default one game during the season)
    • Have at least a 5 Sportsmanship score at end of regular season
    • Have 0 or 1 ejection on the team (2 or more ejected players will automatically disqualify a team from playoffs)
    • Completed the captain's meeting quiz prior to the deadline
  • Any player that gets ejected from a game for misconduct/behavior issues will automatically be disqualified from playoffs for that team.
  • Accumulation penalties: Players that accumulate a second caution in the sport will be suspended their next game. Cautions will stay on their record during the entire season, including playoffs. Ex: Player A gets a yellow card in soccer in their first game, then gets another yellow in their second game. The player will then be suspended for their third game. (Yellow cards or the equivalent in each sports, such as technical fouls in basketball or unsportsmanlike conduct in flag football)
  • This allows all teams to potentially qualify for playoffs, pending they meet all the above requirements

Free Agent Teams

How to register for a free agent team:

  1. All free agent players will need to purchase a Rec Sports ONE Pass
  2. Visit the registration page and find the sport, league and division that works best for you.
  3. Request to join a free agent team from the list below.
