The Importance of Water

As we head into summer, the weather outside is beginning to get much warmer. And with rising temperatures it's especially important to remember to drink water. Getting enough water is beneficial for overall health. Water helps your bodily functions stay regular as it helps control your body temperature, helps deliver nutrients to cells, and gets rid of waste through sweat and urination. Water also has protective traits as it serves as a way to keep your joints lubricated and protect your spine, keeping you moving normally. Drinking enough water can also help prevent constipation and the formation of kidney stones.  Most importantly, regular water intake can help prevent dehydration which, if left unchecked, can cause overheating, unclear thinking, headaches, and mood changes. The general guidelines for water is about 13 cups for men and 9 cups for women daily. But it also depends on your activity level for the day, you may want to drink more or less. Keep in mind these times to drink water in order to keep yourself hydrated and healthy.

  • In hot climates
  • Being more physically active
  • Running a fever
  • Having diarrhea or vomiting

Water is not the only way to stay hydrated. Sports drinks are also great for hydration especially after a high intensity workout as it can keep you hydrated and the sugar in the drinks can replenish your  energy. You can also consume foods with a high water content, like fruits and vegetables.
